But, if we were to look at the history of any new finding, new innovation, those finding always remained an outlier, until it reached the consensus point.

In this 21st century, consensus building along with crony peer effect is giving arsenal to those half-baked cooks and/or crooks to come to prominence, and remain in prominence, while genuine researchers are lost in wilderness.

Is this a new happening?
Not really. But, with superior tracking system and technology in place, it should not happen to the same extent as it happened 100 years back.

Does it mean that consensus is not required?
Obviously, no. But, it depends on the situation.
