Each number has its own value. If you were to ask me to pick only one digit, I would also pick - nine (Navras, Navratri, Hanuman's favorite number :-) ). By the way, it is one number with a finite value, but supports every other number like 0.
9 + 1 = 10; 1 + 0 = 1
9 + 2 = 11; 1 + 1 = 2
