Witzelsucht or Really Punny - How do we know? It depends on frequency, timing, audience to name a few variables.

For example, waking up in the middle of the night to disturb spouse for a pun as shared in this article vs cracking a pun to relax - there is a difference.

When it comes to social media, there are people with different levels of sense of humor, and the frequency and the quality of pun depends on the sender-receiver chemistry/understanding as much as what is being fed in the chain of social media feeds.

Similarly, profession and nature of a job will determine whether someone would use more pun/jokes or not. Many of the great teachers intermixed their lectures with jokes, puns, parables, a degree of playfulness and stories to make it interesting, and also to reach a wider audience group seen in a class.

Similarly, elders after retirement, having gone through a life filled with burden for the entire life, slowly lower their guards down, and increase their sense of humor.

To give an example, there are articles out there suggesting staring at breasts is equivalent to 30 minutes aerobic activity. What are we supposed to do reading those kind of studies? Be serious or pun away, and wonder how such studies were funded in the first place (A detailed report coming soon).

In the same way as Witzelsucht, those who can't take jokes/pun are tend to be classified under social anxiety syndrome class or, a lighter one would be Sidhu moonchi (Tamil)
